Shavkat Mirziyoyev examined a presentation of proposals for reforming the spheres of intellectual property, archival affairs, and legal education, according to the president’s press service.
During the discussion, it was noted that extensive work has been carried out in the field of intellectual property in recent years. In particular, 51 regulatory legal documents have been adopted, and Uzbekistan has joined 8 international treaties. Intellectual property protection has also been strengthened — administrative and criminal liability for offenses in this area has been tightened.
In the customs sphere, the “ex officio” procedure has been introduced, a procedure for the destruction of counterfeit products has also been introduced, and a counterfeit-free month is held annually. Currently, the number of intellectual property objects has exceeded 102 thousand. In this regard, the protection of both local brands abroad and foreign brands in the Uzbek market has been expanded.
Also, 23 geographical indications were registered, including Samarkand bread, Chust knives, Margilan adras. Thanks to the work being carried out, the country has risen 14 positions and ranked 79th in the Global Innovation Index. Therefore, during the presentation, the authorities studied plans for the further development of the sphere.
In particular, it is planned to develop a National Strategy for the Development of Intellectual Property with the World Intellectual Property Organization. It is planned to simplify the procedure for making changes to patents and certificates, as well as to introduce 5 composite and 4 proactive services.
In addition, the state of use of intellectual property will now be taken into account in the Sustainability Rating of business entities. It is planned to open centers for promoting patenting, implementation in production, and commercialization in all higher educational institutions and research institutions. At the National University, and then at four more universities, the authorities want to create a “Intellectual Property Management” direction.
In addition, to incentivize authors and specialists, it is proposed to hold an annual “Best Intellectual Property Objects” competition in 5 nominations. Also, a special badge “For Contribution to the Development of the Intellectual Property Sphere” will be established, which will be awarded on April 26 — International Intellectual Property Day.
Earlier, it was reported that the US removed Uzbekistan from the list of countries violating intellectual property. Turkmenistan remains under US surveillance in Central Asia.
