Videos showing locust infestations in several regions of Uzbekistan have been widely shared on social media. Eyewitness footage shows insects swarming the streets and covering everything, including people. The Agency of Sanitary Supervision provided comments on the situation.

The agency explained that the mass spread of locusts was caused by natural factors, including sharp fluctuations in temperature and precipitation. In Uzbekistan, the locust season begins in the southern regions and ends in the Fergana Valley and Karakalpakstan.

At the same time, in some regions locusts have reached the period when they grow wings, fly and naturally die. During this period, insects gather on light places at night. This is what causes panic among social media users.

Locusts were also reported near a 500 MW wind farm in Gijduvan district of Bukhara region. Experts stated that barrier protection was implemented around the facility, followed by chemical treatment.

The Agency stated that in Zami district of Jizzak oblast the treatment took place on June 11. At the moment locusts have been destroyed and the territory is clean.
