Protection orders will be issued to citizens who report corruption in Uzbekistan

The Director of the Anti-Corruption Agency said that journalists and bloggers especially need protection.

Protection orders will be issued to citizens who report corruption in Uzbekistan, the presidential press service reports.

According to the Director of the Anti-Corruption Agency, Akmal Burkhanov, about 30% of citizens are afraid to report corruption, fearing lack of protection. The head of the agency noted that this is especially true for journalists and bloggers: as soon as they raise the topic, pressure from government agencies or editorial offices begins.

To address these issues, a draft law on the protection of individuals reporting corruption has been developed, which provides for protection mechanisms and separate guarantees, including for journalists conducting investigations.

If the law is adopted, citizens and informants will be able to report corruption facts without fear. In addition, a draft law on strengthening responsibility for corruption crimes is being considered in parliament, — Burkhanov said.

Recall that in three regions of Uzbekistan, law enforcement officers stopped and detained law enforcement officers caught taking bribes. Criminal cases have been initiated against them.
