“They’re starving and beating them”: Eco-activists sound the alarm after spotting a traveling zoo in Syrdarya

Local authorities were called to investigate the situation.

In the Syrdarya region, unknown individuals organized a mobile zoo in the center of the city, where wild animals are kept in harsh conditions. This was reported by eco-activists at NOVA24.

A mobile zoo was opened in the area of the Gulistan Central Market. In the footage shared by witnesses, wolves, bears, reptiles, and lions are being held in narrow enclosures without adhering to sanitary norms. The author of the Ecolog.uz Telegram channel also spoke about the animals being kept without food and water and regularly beaten by zoo staff.

Eco-activists reminded that such a situation is a violation of the law. In particular, starting January 1, 2025, individuals are prohibited from keeping wild animals in captivity, as well as using them in state and mobile circuses. Keeping such animals in zoos and nurseries is only possible with a special permit. The Ecology Departments of Syrdarya region and Gulistan called for clarification of the situation.

Earlier, it was reported that a man in the Tashkent region attempted to illegally take out Red Book-listed falcons. The perpetrator tied the birds’ eyes and feet, wrapped the wings with scotch tape, and sealed them tightly in a narrow bag to hide the smuggling.
