Uzbekistan will deal with dangerous gas stations

The authorities will introduce a number of rules that will ensure the safety of citizens and gas station employees.

From January 2026, Uzbekistan will ban the import and use of old tanks at gas stations, tighten inspections and staff training, and relocate dangerous stations to safe zones, according to a government decree.

From January 2026, taking into account the storage of socially hazardous products at pressure facilities, it will be prohibited to import containers that have been in operation for more than five years, as well as those whose production period cannot be established, into the territory of the republic. Such tanks are subject to decommissioning.

It is also prohibited to use containers in which tanks for storing petroleum products (gasoline, diesel fuel) and liquefied petroleum gas, as well as fuel dispensing columns, are located in one place. Starting from March 2026, ministries and agencies will develop a procedure that provides for annual testing of the knowledge level of gas station employees.

The goal is to prevent emergencies, ensure the safety of citizens and labor protection, and comply with urban planning regulations. “Uzenergoinspeksiya” together with the Committee on Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety will conduct inspections once a year. The Business Ombudsman will be notified of such inspections within 24 hours.

By April 2026, measures will be taken to relocate gas stations that pose a threat to the life and health of citizens, violate the requirements of public, industrial, and fire safety, environmental, and urban planning norms, including sanitary protection zones, to safe areas.

It should be recalled that in December, due to a safety violation during the unloading of fuel at a gas station in Fergana, a gas leak began. The fuel quickly spread throughout the district, surrounding people and cars. At one point, the fuel exploded.

The head of the Fergana region personally met with the relatives of the victims of the gas station explosion and compensation was paid to all families. It was also confirmed that 4 people died in the gas station explosion, and another 13 people were taken to the hospital.
