Uzbekistan joins ASEAN Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, strengthening Southeast Asian partnership

During the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have approved Uzbekistan’s formal accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) in Southeast Asia, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

The initiative for Uzbekistan’s accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) in Southeast Asia was put forward by the President of Uzbekistan. After nearly a year of preparatory work and diplomatic negotiations, Uzbekistan’s membership was formally approved during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Kuala Lumpur under the chairmanship of Malaysia.

It is noteworthy that the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) was originally signed on 24 February 1976 in Bali, Indonesia. The treaty is recognized as a foundational document establishing the core principles of cooperation, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect among ASEAN member states.

The ASEAN region itself encompasses 11 Southeast Asian countries, home to approximately 700 million people, highlighting the strategic significance of Uzbekistan’s accession in fostering broader regional engagement and partnership.

Earlier, it was reported that Uzbekistan had agreed with Ecuador to join the WTO. The country has become one step closer to the organization.
