The remains of an ancient city were found in Kashkadarya

The find dates back to the 3rd century BC.

Specialists of the Samarkand Institute of Archaeology, during their research, discovered the remains of a city-fortress dating back to the 3rd century BC — 3rd century AD on a hill in the Pasttol village of the Qamashi district of the region, UzA reports.

The hill, located in the Kashkadarya oasis, covers an area of more than 6 hectares and has a height of 8-10 meters. The ancient monument discovered in the territory is the remains of a city-fortress with a rectangular shape. Institute researcher Sanjar Abdurahimov said that in the central part of the fortress, according to scientists’ assumptions, there was a palace or prayer room.

Specialists also discovered the remains of a large hall and several rooms, fragments of wall paintings. Additionally, defensive walls, guardrooms, pottery workshops, urns, and numerous ceramic items were found on the hill.

Ceramic figurines, urns, and vessels are made very elegantly. Among the finds, there are figurines characteristic of the Seleucid state and the Kushan period. “As it turned out, pottery and stoneworking were developed here,
said a representative of the Samarkand Institute of Archaeology.

Dilmurod Omonov noted that as a result of field archaeological research conducted in the Kashkadarya oasis, scientists have discovered more than 100 new monuments. The specialist said that the monuments are well preserved, which creates great opportunities for large-scale research in the future. The institute’s senior researcher Abdusabur Raimkulov also said that there are more than 1,500 archaeological monuments in the territory.

Urban culture was formed here as early as the 9th-8th centuries BC. The increase in the number of cities is due to the location of Kashkadarya on the caravan route connecting Bukhara and Khorezm. In the Middle Ages, there were more than 30 large cities in the territory of the oasis, — said a representative of the research group.

Earlier, it was reported that fossilized dinosaur remains were found in Karakalpakstan. According to preliminary data from archaeologists, the discovered ancient animal lived approximately 75 million years ago.
