In Uzbekistan, it is planned to strengthen the system of protecting women who have suffered from harassment and violence, as well as to introduce the concept of “best interests of the child” into national legislation to improve the protection of children, the press service of the Legislative Chamber reports.
According to the information, the authorities plan to grant the National Agency for Social Protection and Women’s Rehabilitation and Adaptation Centers the right to apply to the courts in the interests of victims of violence without paying a state fee, as well as to participate in court hearings as their representatives.
The draft law also guarantees the preservation of the workplace and position held by victims during their stay in specialized centers. Furthermore, the authorities plan to introduce the concept of “child’s best interests” into legislation as part of improving the legal framework for protecting children’s rights.
It is planned that the new law will contribute to further strengthening the legal foundations of state protection of the rights and legitimate interests of women who have suffered from harassment and violence, as well as their minor children. The deputies adopted the document in the first reading, and before it comes into force, it will have to pass two more readings in the Legislative Chamber, be approved by the Senate, and be signed by the president.
Earlier, it was reported that in November-December, the Ombudsman, within the framework of the “Equality and Respect” platform, held practical measures aimed at supporting women who have experienced violence. Events were organized in Karakalpakstan, Fergana, Surkhandarya, Namangan, Bukhara, Khorezm, Samarkand, and Navoi.
