In Uzbekistan, a number of public-private partnership projects are planned to be implemented for wastewater treatment, which will help ensure the improvement of the situation, said Minister of Construction and Housing and Communal Services Sherzod Hidoyatov.

The department representative said that one of the largest projects will be the solution to the problem of unpleasant odor coming from the “Salar” wastewater treatment facilities located in the Sergeli district of Tashkent. In particular, to solve this problem, authorities plan to build a wastewater facility with a capacity of 1 million cubic meters per day in the area of New Tashkent.

The project, worth $1 billion, is planned to be implemented jointly with a UAE company. According to the plan, wastewater from the “Salar” and “Bektemir” treatment plants will be directed to a new facility being built in the “Surum” neighborhood. Also, the authorities plan to build a sewage collector with a length of 42 km.

It is noted that after the commissioning of the new complex, the activities of the old facilities will cease, as the facility will be able to ensure complete treatment of wastewater in the territory. In addition, the ministry representative spoke about two more projects that are planned to be built jointly with the UAE.

For example, in Kashkadarya region, authorities plan to modernize the $600 million worth of sewage system, as well as implement a project to process wastewater, produce fuel products worth $50 million, and install filters to retain fats coming from kitchens.

Also, together with companies from Saudi Arabia, specialists plan to implement wastewater treatment systems in Fergana and Jizzakh regions, as well as to reconstruct treatment facilities in Namangan region and bring their capacity to 100 thousand cubic meters of wastewater per day.

Sherzod Hidoyatov noted that the project involves the use of Nereda technology, within which specialists grow “active sludge” in granulated form and saturate wastewater with oxygen for more efficient treatment. The representative of the department emphasized that the implementation of the project will increase the efficiency of water treatment and improve the service of an additional 200 thousand people, as well as increase the level of coverage of the population with centralized sewage services to 22.3% in 2025.

Earlier, it was reported that almost 20% of Uzbekistanis still do not have access to water. The lowest result was found in Kashkadarya region.
