Uzbekistan can teach Russia how to fight polygamy

The issue is being worked out in the Russian Federation against the backdrop of an increase in the number of such marriages.

Russia can take advantage of Uzbekistan’s experience in combating polygamy and wearing niqabs, TASS reports, citing Valery Fadeev, head of the Council under the President of the Russian Federation for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights.

The specialist said that in Russia, unofficially, but polygamy is common, especially in some regions, and emphasized that this is a real problem.

What to do with this? There are voices calling for official permission for polygamy in our Russia, and there is a serious discussion about this. The discussion is more about finding arguments that would not allow polygamy, — noted Valery Fadeev.

At the same time, the head of the Russian IPC stated that the secularism of the state in Uzbekistan is carried out very persistently. In particular, there is a serious punishment for promoting cohabitation with two or more women, for being in public places with a covered face to the extent that it does not allow identification of a person. Valery Fadeev noted that this “may seem strange, but we have something to learn”.

A very important topic for Russia is Uzbekistan’s experience in implementing the model of a secular society. Recently, laws were also adopted, you know them better, we are studying them in Russia. Polygamy, niqab. These were very decisive actions. This discussion is taking place in Russia, — concluded the head of the Council under the President of the Russian Federation.

Earlier, it was reported that Russia had changed its mind to allowing polygamy. The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation appealed to the Council of Ulema of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims.
