A powerful earthquake hit Afghanistan, resulting in over 600 deaths, Reuters reports.
A magnitude 6 earthquake struck approximately 200 km from Kabul and 400 km from the Pakistani city of Islamabad. The epicentre was at a depth of 8 km. Following the main shock, three aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 4.5 to 5.2 were recorded. As a result of the earthquake, 622 people lost their lives, and another 1,500 were injured.
It is reported that the figures are “not final, as rescue teams are still being sent to remote areas”. Rescuers are removing debris and transporting victims to safe locations. Many victims remain trapped under the rubble.
“All our … teams have been mobilised to accelerate assistance, so that comprehensive and full support can be provided,” said health ministry spokesperson Abdul Maten Qanee, citing efforts in areas from security to food and health.
As a reminder, a tragic road accident took place in Afghanistan, resulting in over 70 fatalities. The incident was caused by the bus driver’s excessive speed and negligence.
