Kazakhstan declared a state of emergency due to a fire at a household waste landfill

Rescuers have been fighting the fire for three days, with the flames currently engulfing 10 hectares.

In Kazakhstan, due to a major fire at a local solid household waste landfill, authorities have introduced a state of emergency of a technogenic nature, Kazinform reports.

According to the information, the fire broke out in Alatau, a new city in the Almaty region. The country’s leader signed a decree on its creation in January 2024. This territory is planned to become an international business hub. It is noted that the fire occurred at the TBO landfill, which is located at the 35th kilometer of the Almaty – Ust-Kamenogorsk highway.

The fire broke out on September 15th, and specialists have yet to extinguish the flames. Of the total area of the 35-hectare landfill, about 10 are currently engulfed in flames. The administration noted that a special inspection is planned to determine the causes of the fire.

Since the fire has engulfed a significant area, the introduction of a state of emergency allows for the prompt mobilization of all necessary forces and resources. The measures taken are aimed at accelerating the work to eliminate the consequences. The situation is under constant control. There is no threat to the lives of residents, — the department also reported.

Earlier, it was reported that an explosion at a scrap metal acceptance site in Kazakhstan claimed the lives of three Uzbek citizens. The investigation is examining the circumstances of the emergency.
