In Uzbekistan, prisoners for reading books will have their sentences reduced, the press service of the Ministry of Justice reports.

According to the department, persons specified in part 4 of Article 73 of the Criminal Code (conditional release from serving a sentence), with the exception of those sentenced to life imprisonment, may be sentenced to imprisonment.

At the same time, the fact that the convicted person has read books from the list of approved literature aimed at forming correct spiritual and moral values must be confirmed. The period can be reduced by 3 days for each book read, but no more than 30 days during the year.

The fact of reading books is established on the basis of the convict’s application submitted to the administration of the correctional facility by a commission consisting of the facility’s employees, representatives of the public, and other persons. Commission meetings are held at least twice a year.

Based on the results of the inspection, the commission adopts a conclusion confirming the fact of reading books. A copy of the report is sent to the prosecutor, handed to the convicted person for signature, and also presented to his defense counsel upon request.

If the conclusion confirming the fact of reading books is accepted, the institution’s administration shall send a submission to the court regarding the reduction of the sentence term due to the convict’s transition to the path of correction. The reduction of the term of punishment due to the convict’s return to the path of correction is carried out by the court, — the report says.

Earlier, it was also reported that convicts will take exams for each book they read. The list of literature will be approved by the Republican Center for Spirituality and Enlightenment.
