Electricity generation at hydroelectric power stations in Uzbekistan has decreased due to water shortages, according to Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamahmudov.

According to the head of the Ministry of Energy, in 2025, the inflow of water into the republic decreased by 35% compared to last year. The main reason for the decrease in electricity production by large hydroelectric power plants is the small volume of water.

We are increasing the number of small and micro hydropower plants. Due to the commissioning of small and micro hydropower plants with a capacity of up to 5 MW, 140 million kWh was produced – this is very little. We will definitely develop hydropower, but since it depends on water resources, we are relying on alternative energy to reduce gas consumption: solar, wind, and energy storage systems, — Mirzamahmudov stated.

The authorities are developing plans for the construction of water-accumulating stations. However, the construction of a large hydroelectric power plant takes from 6 to 10 years, so the cheapest way to provide energy in the short term is “green” energy.
