A new UNESCO head has been appointed in Samarkand
The organization will be headed by Khaled el-Anani.

Egypt’s renowned professor Khaled al-Anani has been elected as UNESCO’s new Director-General, Dunyo reports.
According to the information, Khaled al-Anani received 172 votes out of 174 submitted ballots and became the 12th UNESCO Director-General. It is noted that the new head of the organization is a renowned Egyptologist and Professor of Egyptology at Helwan University, where he has been teaching for over 30 years.
He will take office on November 15th for a four-year term, replacing Audrey Azoulay, who had led UNESCO since 2017. Previously, the specialist headed the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, as well as the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. From 2016 to 2022, he held the position of Minister of Antiquities, and then Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt.
In November 2024, the World Tourism Organization appointed him as the Special Ambassador for Cultural Tourism, and subsequently, he became the patron of the African World Heritage Foundation. It is noted that Al-Enani is a member of several international scientific societies, speaks Arabic, French, and English, and has been awarded several international awards.
Earlier, it was reported that Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced a number of initiatives at the UNESCO General Conference. The president’s proposals addressed various aspects of the partnership.
