In Samarkand, gas service employees were convicted after an explosion that claimed the lives of a seven-person family

The investigation revealed that before the incident, residents of the house had appealed to the gas service 11 times with complaints about the smell of gas, but their statements remained unanswered.

A verdict has been issued in a case involving an explosion in Samarkand that claimed the lives of seven members of a single family, Zamon reported.

The tragedy occurred in May 2025 in the Bogisaroy neighborhood. Initially, the regional emergency department reported six deaths, but later it became known that seven people had died.

The investigation revealed that before the incident, residents of the house had appealed to the gas service 11 times with complaints about the smell of gas, but their statements remained unanswered.

The court found the head of the city gas supply department of the “Hududgaz Samarkand” branch and his three employees guilty under Article 116, Part 4, Clauses “a” and “b” of the Criminal Code — “Improper performance of professional duties”. All four were sentenced to 7 years in prison with a 3-year ban on holding leadership and materially responsible positions.

Additionally, the court ordered the gas supply company to pay approximately 6 billion soums in compensation to the affected citizens.

During the investigation, it was revealed that in September-October of last year, the work on gasification of houses was carried out without a project and technical conditions. The contractors illegally laid a gas pipeline under the highway without the necessary conclusions and protective coating, and also illegally connected it to the network. As a result, seven holes formed in the pipe, through which the gas seeped into the central sewer well. This led to the explosion.

As a reminder, the explosion caused the building’s reinforced concrete structures to collapse. The basement rooms, as well as the first, second, and third floors, were damaged. There was no fire after the explosion.

10 units of main and special fire and rescue equipment, as well as forces and resources of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, were involved in the elimination of the consequences of the incident. During rescue operations, the bodies of six deceased were found under the rubble. A preliminary investigation has been launched into the incident.

Earlier, it was reported that employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations began inspecting mosques in Uzbekistan after the gas explosion in Andijan. Special attention was paid to living quarters and ablution rooms.
