In Samarkand, brothers beat a relative to death due to gambling addiction

The desire to break this bad habit turned into a tragedy and imprisonment.

In Samarkand, the brothers who beat a relative to death in order to get rid of gambling addiction were sentenced, Supreme Court press secretary Aziz Abidov reports.

According to the information, the incident occurred on June 20. A 29-year-old local resident suffered from gambling addiction and online betting. The man’s relatives, to “punish” him and dissuade him from bad habits, tied the victim to a tree and beat him with an electrical cable. As a result, the man died from his injuries.

The deceased’s wife confirmed that the man had indeed suffered from addiction, but stated that he had paid loans on his own and had not harmed anyone. According to the woman, the father-in-law explained the incident by saying he wanted the man to pay the loan, but 10-15 days before the tragedy, the man had already started paying it off.

The Samarkand City Criminal Court found his older brother guilty under Article 138, Part 2 (Illegal imprisonment) and Article 104, Part 3 (Inflicting grievous bodily harm resulting in death) and sentenced him to 8 years and 6 months in prison.

Also, the court found the younger relative of the deceased man, who was involved in the beating, guilty and sentenced him to 6 years and 6 months of imprisonment with sentencing in a penal colony.

Earlier, it was reported that a store owner who beat a customer to death was sentenced in Chirchik. In addition to the prison sentence, he was obligated to compensate for the damage caused.
