A man in Samarkand was sentenced to three years in prison for participating in the war in Ukraine

The Uzbek citizen participated in the fighting for about a year, then, after being wounded, appealed to the embassy and, upon returning to his homeland, pleaded with law enforcement.

In the Samarkand region, a 27-year-old citizen who participated in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine was sentenced, according to the court’s decision.

According to the information, in 2019, a resident of the Paxtachi district went to Russia for work, after which he was convicted in 2021 for illegal drug trafficking and sent to a maximum-security colony in the Chelyabinsk region. In 2024, Russian law enforcement officers offered a prisoner to participate in the conflict in exchange for release, obtaining Russian citizenship, and a monetary reward.

The man agreed, after which he underwent military training in Luhansk and participated in combat operations in the Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Kursk regions as part of the Russian Armed Forces. After being wounded, he was hospitalized in Moscow. After recovering in March 2025, the man applied to the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Moscow, received new documents, and on March 28, 2025, returned to his homeland and voluntarily applied to the Department of Internal Affairs.

The Paxtachi District Criminal Court found the man guilty under Article 154, Part 1 (Mercenarism), however, it took into account the man’s sincere admission of guilt and remorse, lack of prior convictions, as well as his difficult financial situation and voluntary confession when sentencing him. As a result, the citizen was sentenced to 3 years in a general regime colony.

Earlier, it was reported that a labor migrant in Uzbekistan was convicted of participating in the war in Ukraine. The defendant escaped from prison.
