A criminal case has been opened over large-scale tree cutting in Tashkent

Bakhtiyor Rahmonov, who signed the order to cut down the trees, still remains in his position.

On November 8, the Prosecutor General’s Office initiated a criminal case against landscapers after a large illegal felling of trees in Tashkent, according to Rasul Kusherbayev, an advisor to the Ministry of Ecology.

According to the official, the case was initiated under part 2 of Article 198 (damage or destruction of crops, forests, trees or other plants). Currently, investigative actions are underway. The perpetrators face a fine of 300 BCV (123.6 million soums) to 2 years of correctional labor.

Interestingly, the deputy mayor of the capital, Bakhtiyor Rahmonov, who ordered the trees to be cut down, remains “clean” again. Instead, the responsibility seems to fall on the beautification workers who simply followed the instruction and “have no weight”. This is a real vileness! Let’s see if the prosecutor’s courage and strength will be enough to apply the law to everyone, including the deputy governor, or will this force only work against ordinary people? — Kusherbayev wrote.

As a reminder, 145 trees were illegally cut down during the improvement of Babur Street in Tashkent, although they were planned to be transplanted. The capital’s administration reported that some of the trees were diseased, and an official investigation is underway regarding the responsible individuals’ negligence.

Later it became known that a total of 174 trees and shrubs had been cut down. The amount of damage caused to the plant world amounted to 1 billion 460 million 952 thousand soums. The capital’s administration stated that tens of thousands of new plants will be planted in place of the destroyed ones.
